Legal Aid Service of Collier County (LASCC) has named Cohen & Grigsby, P.C. as it’s ‘Law Firm of the Year’ for 2008 in recognition of the firm’s many contributions to the program, and dedication to pro bono service to the community. LASCC is a private, non-profit law firm that provides free civil legal assistance to low-income clients in Collier County.
Notification of the award was made to Jason Hunter Korn, Esq., a director in Cohen & Grigsby’s Naples and Bonita Springs offices. Cohen & Grigsby’s headquarters is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Partners and associates with the Cohen & Grigsby firm volunteered a substantial amount of time and resources in 2008 to assist LASCC, and the Collier Lawyers Care (CLC) Pro Bono Program operated by this non-profit agency. “We are excited to recognize Cohen & Grigsby as our Law Firm of the Year, given the remarkable contributions the firm made in 2008 to Legal Aid Service of Collier County, and, most importantly, to the underserved population in the area,” states Tony Karrat, Esq., Executive Director of LASCC.
The Legal Aid programs and initiatives that Cohen & Grigsby provided crucial support on in 2008 include:
-
The Collier County Foreclosure Task Force
-
Wills for Heroes
-
LASCC’s 2008 Annual Campaign
-
LASCC’s annual ‘Adopt-A-Family’ Holiday Program
-
Pro Bono Legal Clinics -in Naples and Immokalee
Steering Committee for a Coordinated Community Response concerning Foreclosed and Abandoned Homes - facilitated through the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce
Cohen & Grigsby’s Kelley Geraghty Price, Esq., a director of the firm, was a founding member of the grassroots Collier County Foreclosure Task Force initiative, formed in February of 2008 by LASCC and members of the Collier County Bar Association to promote foreclosure prevention in Collier County. Brian Williams, Esq., an associate with the firm, has also served on the Task Force, and has been a speaker-presenter at free public seminars sponsored through the initiative. Ms. Price was recently named recipient of LASCC’s prestigious Hon. Janeice T. Martin Equal Justice Award, in recognition of her unique and invaluable service and leadership to LASCC over the years as a pro bono attorney with CLC, Advisory Board member, and vigorous supporter of Legal Aid when she served as President of the Collier County Bar Association in 2004.
The ‘Wills for Heroes’ program was launched in 2008 in conjunction with LASCC, largely through the efforts of Marc Soss, Esq., a director of the firm, as well as Ms. Price. This program aims to provide Wills and other basic estate planning instruments free of charge to lower income Veterans and their spouses. Mr. Soss is a Veteran, having served in a Special Forces Unit in Afghanistan. Legal Aid’s 2nd annual ‘Adopt-A-Family’ Holiday Program was highly successful in December of 2008, thanks to the support of donors including Cohen & Grigsby’s Andrew Solis, Esq., also a director with the firm. The Adopt-A-Family Holiday Program matches needy children and their families with donors in the legal community willing to purchase toys, gifts, clothes and food for those unable to afford a holiday celebration. Over 118 children received gifts through the program in 2008. Mr. Solis and other Cohen & Grigsby attorneys participated in pro bono legal clinics sponsored by the Collier County Bar Association and Legal Aid - including a November clinic in Immokalee.
Ms. Price was the spokesperson for LASCC’s Annual Campaign in 2008, and was featured in LASCC’s mailing piece. The ‘Be a Hero’ campaign she promoted was the most successful ever conducted by LASCC regarding the amount of money raised, and number of pro bono attorneys recruited.
The Law Firm of the Year award will be presented to Mr. Korn on behalf of Cohen & Grigsby at LASCC’s Fundraiser Dinner on April 23, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel in Naples.
